A shark carcass was found this morning on the Platamona coast in front of the Il Pescatore restaurant.
The approximately 3.5-meter-long marine animal, washed ashore on the beach, aroused the curiosity of several visitors, who rushed to the beach to take photos and film the animal, producing videos and images that went viral online.
The Port Authority of Turritana responded to the scene, requesting the assistance of local health authorities (ASL) staff to identify the species and measure its size. It is likely a specimen of the flathead shark, also known as the sixgill shark, harmless to humans, belonging to the Hexanchus genus. At 5.4 meters, it is the largest shark in the Hexanchidae family.
The animal was spotted on the shoreline by residents who reported its presence to the authorities. The species lives primarily in the oceans, occurring worldwide in tropical and temperate waters. Its widespread presence is explained by the fact that it is a highly migratory species.
