Six years and a lifetime ahead of her, September, school just starting. Then the unexpected happens on a Sunday afternoon spent playing on her bike: a car accident, a very serious one. And the lights go out. Everything is suspended.
The news that day recounts the emergency rescue and transport to the Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari by helicopter. Then, the transfer to Rome on an Italian Air Force flight: the injuries he sustained were too serious. Destination: Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital.
The ordeal of a six-year-old boy and his family, living in a small town in the Medio Campidano region (we are withholding names and details to protect the child's privacy), will last thirteen and a half months and fourteen very delicate operations . Added to this is the upheaval in the lives of his parents and little brother, who suddenly find themselves catapulted into a situation no one would want to experience, but all of them come together to care for and encourage the little one of the family.
"These were truly difficult times," the father says. "We had to make great sacrifices. Fortunately, we were supported by so many people, both in our country and abroad. In Rome, I was a guest at the Ronald McDonald House. I must truly thank all the volunteers from the associations who helped us, even in the hospital."
Solidarity has not been lacking in Sardinia either. "I own a business," he continues, "I had to give up everything; I thought I'd have to close down. It was the workers who decided to run the business independently . So today we're still standing."
There are many photos, posts and videos online that testify to the progress of the treatment: «Initially we didn't feel like it, then we thought that publishing them was a way to give courage to our son and ourselves».
One improvement after another, and the doctors' long-awaited green light for discharge: fasten your seatbelts, and you're going home tomorrow.
