A trial will determine whether the Saras refinery polluted with its flares . Preliminary hearings judge Marco Mascia has indicted Settimio Guarrata , CEO and president of Sarlux, and Walter Cocco , former head of technical management and environmental aspects of the plant, on suspicion of environmental disaster related to emissions from the Sarlux refinery (Saras group) in Sarroch. Fabio Corvetto , head of Health, Environment, and Safety (HSE) inspections, has also been charged with obstruction of inspection.
The charges brought by prosecutor Giangiacomo Pilia concern the continuous and massive polluting emissions recorded over the years. The prosecutor's office is examining the quantities of gas burned by the refinery's flares, the failure or miscommunication with supervisory authorities, and the peaks in benzene and particulate matter detected in the town of Sarroch , potentially harmful to public health. The defendants and Sarlux itself have been adjourned to December 17, 2026, before the judges of the second section. This is the first of two investigations involving the Sarroch refinery ; the second, closed a few days ago, concerns another alleged pollution of the air, soil, and sea.
