The bike lanes are closed, and the controversy reignites. From Via Marongiu to Via Cornalias, from Via Is Guadazzonis to the Quartiere del Sole neighborhood. The completion of the new urban bike lanes has been postponed until further notice. This is the fault of the contractor in charge of the work, who, after months of delays and noncompliance, forced the City to terminate the contract. The result is an incomplete network that will remain so until a new contractor is found, with a timeline still to be determined.
The news, which emerged during last Monday's Mobility Commission meeting, reignites the political conflict over one of the most controversial issues in the city's traffic system: bike lanes. The opposition denounces the disruption caused by the construction work and the consequences of the changes to traffic flow. The majority, however, maintains the correctness of the decision, which was made after the city failed to comply with contractual obligations.
The attack
"To add insult to injury," attacks Roberto Mura, councilor for Alleanza Sardegna. "After months of construction, disruption, and disrupted traffic, we discover that the Municipality is terminating the contract with the company due to breaches, without even having a firm completion date."
The majority rejects the accusations. "The Municipality awarded the works through a public tender, in compliance with current regulations," explains Giovanni Porrà, chairman of the Budget Committee.
