The search for the masked, armed men who botched the robbery of a car carrier on state highway 387 this morning has been extended to various parts of Sardinia : the Carabinieri carried out several searches following checkpoints set up throughout the morning on state, provincial, and rural roads across the island.
Members of the armored vehicle's crew, including the driver, have already been questioned. Several motorists who were passing through the area when the fire broke out were also questioned. The fire engulfed a large truck, two Fiat 500s, and a Fiat Multipla, all vehicles reportedly stolen by bandits from various parts of the island.
Several people were involved in the attempted robbery: the hypothesis is that there were at least 7 or 8, perhaps ten .
It was 8 a.m. when the criminals swung into action : armed and masked, they blocked the road by setting several vehicles on fire and plowing them across the road to force the armored van to stop. However, the driver noticed what was happening and managed to escape the area . Having failed, the robbers fled in their car and disappeared without a trace.
