The Oristano Port Authority has announced that in recent days a 2,164-ton cargo ship took the “wrong” route when entering the Marine Protected Area of the Island of Mal di Ventre, “a very delicate stretch of sea from an environmental point of view and which must be protected with the utmost attention.”
The alarm about the dangerous presence of the merchant ship, flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda and just set sail from the port of Oristano, was raised by some yachtsmen.
"Immediately - explains a note from the Harbour Office - the personnel of the Oristano Coast Guard contacted the ship by radio to warn the ship that the vessel was proceeding in a prohibited sea area. Once radio contact was established, the crew of the ship received from the personnel of the Oristano Harbour Office all the necessary instructions to exit the prohibited area and correctly set the route towards the new port of destination (Porto Torres) avoiding potential dangers for the safety of navigation and the marine environment in the event that the ship continued to navigate within the protected marine area".
The captain of the vessel was later reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office
of Oristano for failure to comply with the navigation ban in a marine protected area.
