First night as a life prisoner in the Verona Montorio prison for Filippo Turetta , after the first degree conviction handed down yesterday by the Venice Assize Court for the murder of Giulia Cecchettin.

His life will not change much from when, last November 25, he entered the Verona prison. The 22-year-old shares a cell with two other people , this year he has often been alone, reading books or meeting with psychologists and his parents. He watches TV, he has followed the developments of the investigation and the trial against him.

As for the future, the prosecutors had already stressed during their closing speech, life imprisonment is not a “never-ending sentence”. According to the law, in the case of exemplary behavior, Turetta can be granted permission to attend training courses inside or outside prison after just 10 years in prison (he has already served one, so he has 9 to go). And after 26 years, 21 in the case of irreproachable behavior, it will be possible to obtain semi-liberty. The decisions on this matter are up to the Surveillance Court.

Stefano Tigani, civil party lawyer for Gino Cecchettin , also underlined this: «Turetta's future does not interest us, he has to think about it and he will have time to reflect in prison. Life imprisonment is not life imprisonment: a convicted person can show proof of resocialization and access conditional release, if he deserves to access it. It depends on him, now he is a highly dangerous individual, he has demonstrated it, a serious danger to society, therefore the life sentence is the right one ».

Giulia's father, on the other hand, expressed his doubts to Corriere della Sera about the failure to recognise the aggravating circumstances of cruelty and stalking: «If they aren't there with hundreds of messages a day and 75 stab wounds, then what are these aggravating circumstances?» .

Gino Cecchettin reiterated what he said yesterday after the reading of the sentence: "We have all lost." And, on a possible pardon for his daughter's murderer, he declared: "That is a gift that is acquired either because Mother Nature gives it to you or because you reach such a high level that you make a qualitative leap as a man. I have yet to make this leap, and so it is difficult for me to even think about forgiveness ."

The Venice Prosecutor's Office is satisfied with the outcome of the trial . The words of the acting prosecutor Stefano Ancilotto : «As already mentioned, this is not a trial on the phenomenon of feminicides, but on a single person. The most important aggravating circumstance, that of premeditation, has been recognized: the killing of Giulia Cecchettin was not an impulsive act, a moment caused by an argument, but the result of a deliberate choice, planned and organized over time. And this explains the maximum sentence».

Regarding the exclusion of the aggravating circumstances of cruelty and the acquittal from the crime of stalking, Ancilotto simply stated: «We will read what the judges write».
