Serious accident in the municipality of Paola, in the province of Cosenza, in the Carusi district.

Four people died from breathing in the toxic fumes emanating from a vat full of grape must. A fifth person was seriously injured and was transferred to hospital.

The victims are the brothers Giacomo and Valerio Scofano, respectively 70 and 50 years old, and Santino and Massimo Carnevale, father and son of 70 and 40 years. They were working on the production of wine for family use, in particular they were pouring the must from a tank placed under the road level into some barrels.

The first victim who went down to the room that housed the tub would have been hit by illness and the other three would have lowered themselves into the tub, losing their lives too. Three of the victims were found inside the tank while a fourth was almost out, perhaps in an extreme attempt to get out. The lack of oxygen inside the restaurant, a private warehouse, is fatal.

Firefighters are present on site, also waiting for an Nbcr team to understand the type of toxic substances released from the tank.
