The Archbishop of Cagliari, Giuseppe Baturi, who is also secretary of the Italian Episcopal Conference, delivered the letter from Beniamino Zuncheddu, the 59-year-old from Burcei, acquitted after 33 years of the accusation of being the author of the massacre, into the hands of the Pope this morning of Sinnai.
The occasion for the delivery was offered by the pontiff's audience for the meeting with the employees of TV2000 for the 25th anniversary of its foundation.
The letter was entrusted to the archbishop on Sunday 20 January, in a meeting in the parish church of Burcei . In the letter, signed by Zuncheddu himself and the parish priest Don Giuseppe Pisano, Pope Francis is asked for a private audience to express gratitude for the attention shown by the pontiff for the judicial matter .
"The Pope remembered the case well", commented Archbishop Baturi immediately after the letter was handed over to Bergoglio. "For our community it was an important sign of closeness."
