Pain and emotion in Milan at the funeral of little Diana , the 18-month-old girl who died of starvation, after being left alone at home by her mother , Alessia Pifferi, who ended up in prison on charges of voluntary murder.

The farewell service, in the parish of San Pietro e Paolo in San Giuliano, was presided over by the archbishop of Milan Mario Delpini , who read a message to the many participants, including the mayor of the Lombard capital, Beppe Sala .

"We do not understand how the abandonment of a child could have happened until the tragic outcome of the death of hardship. We share the bewilderment and the horror ", said the archbishop. Adding: "Living in the city should mean being part of a community and any loneliness should find a remedy in mutual attention and industrious solidarity. We recognize our powerlessness ".

"Let us pray that Diana will have with God that fullness of life and joy that was denied her on earth - adds Monsignor Delpini -. Let us pray that the incomprehensible drama awakens her mother Alessia to compassion and wisdom. Let us pray that the Spirit of God will help us to to be protagonists of a history of fraternity ".

Beside the white coffin, torn apart, the little girl's grandmother and aunt . White balloons were placed at the entrance to the church. Some mothers from the Ponte Lambro district, where the little girl lived, accompanied the hearse with a pink banner with the inscription: “I will fly on the wings of the world in the infinite sky. I will always remain a child , little Diana ”.
