The funeral of Michela Murgia has ended in Rome. Roberto Saviano together with some members of the family carried the coffin of the Sardinian writer on his shoulders at the end of the funeral celebrated in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Montesanto, the church of the Artists in Piazza del Popolo in Rome. The arrival of the coffin was greeted by five minutes of applause, and its exit was also greeted with a very long applause, with the square intoning "Bella Ciao" for a long time.

The author of Accabadora didn't want flowers : only vegetable compositions, with myrtle, artichokes, chillies, lemon, according to her wishes. For this - his entourage explains - a crown sent by the Municipality was sent back.

Celebrating the function was Don Walter Insero, associate professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University and Chaplain at Rai since 2004, who also held the funerals of Gina Lollobrigida, Gigi Proietti, Andrea Purgatori, Maurizio Costanzo and Fabrizio Frizzi.

«You are in the beyond – he said in the homily – your soul is on a journey towards the Father, not towards nothingness. He fought many battles and kept his faith. He left us this testimony: it is possible to love in pain, greet everyone and be reconciled with everyone". At the opening of the ceremony, a message for Cardinal Zuppi's writer: «The book of his life is not finished, its pages continue to be written with love letters. She wrote it with passion."

The speech of his friend Roberto Saviano was moving: «They are the most difficult words of my life – he began -. Michela wanted this day to be for everyone, for her sharing was the meaning of everything. His choices can be summarized in 'don't be alone, don't leave alone'. She protected everyone to the end, even in the very painful last moments ».

Again, the writer continued: «She was able to not make the pain of her choices of struggle feel, we met and united not for what we did, but for what they did to us. In this country it was possible to consider a writer, intellectual and activist as a political enemy ».

«Michela – he added – was by my side in the trials that concerned me, she was always there for me and I want to give her all my gratitude. Those who really hurt Michela are the ones who had one foot here and one foot there, those who stood in the middle for convenience . They are the ones who made his life so difficult. Michela chose, because silence in the face of horror would have made her unhappy . Choosing is the only thing that made her feel in line with herself».

The Cabras writer died Thursday evening of cancer. He was 51 years old. Catholic and theologian, she has always openly testified to her faith. A creed outside the box, inclusive, and at times even divisive. But his will was precise: a church funeral. He had also greeted Pope Francis in the Sistine Chapel last June 23, during the meeting between the Pontiff and two hundred artists.
