The six-year-old girl, originally from Guinea, who was hospitalized in serious condition at the Children's Hospital in Palermo after crossing with her mother from the African coast to Lampedusa, has been declared brain dead.

The little girl arrived on the night between Thursday and Friday, August 8th, after a five-day journey on a boat with other migrants, who were left adrift in the waves without food or water. The girl's condition immediately appeared serious, and she was airlifted by 118 to Palermo and admitted to intensive care.

The process to determine brain death began this morning. The family has not consented to organ donation.

The mother is assisted by the association Doctors Without Borders with a psychologist and a cultural mediator and by the manager of the Casa di Lucia association.
