With the 12th suicide since the beginning of the year in Italian prisons there is more and more talk of a "humanitarian emergency". The alarm was raised by Uilpa PP which, in the words of the secretary general Gennarino De Fazio, traces the last episode that took place last night around 9.30 pm in Regina Coeli: "A prisoner originally from Morocco decided to end it all , aged only 24, in prison for robbery. He took his own life by inhaling the gas from the canister of the camping stove commonly used for cooking. The average thus leads to a suicide every three and a half days, to which must also be added the two members of the Penitentiary Police who took their lives in this 2022 still in the initial stages, but as fatal as ever in prisons ".

“The prison system - he adds - is literally in disarray, but, what is more serious, it is abandoned to itself by politics, the Minister of Justice and the Government. We have reason to believe that the prison administration itself does not find the political answers it hopes for. However, beyond the theoretical disquisitions and the chatter of politics, what we are witnessing is a carnage that, in a country that wants to call itself civil, must be stopped immediately. If we continued with this average, well over one hundred inmates would die in a year ”.
