It cannot be ruled out that Andrea Cavallari, the 26-year-old wanted since Thursday 3 July, may have gone abroad, towards Eastern Europe, when, after graduating in Legal Sciences from the University of Bologna with a special permit, instead of returning to prison as expected, he disappeared and went on the run .
The investigation and searches, entrusted to the investigative unit of the Emilia-Romagna and Marche penitentiary police and coordinated by the Bologna prosecutor's office, are comprehensive. The investigation is primarily for prison escape, against the young man, who was sentenced to 11 years and 10 months in the trial for the events at the Lanterna Azzurra nightclub in Corinaldo on December 8, 2018 , when a group of teenagers robbing a nightclub with pepper spray killed six people and injured 59 others in the stampede that broke out immediately after the gang entered the scene.
But prosecutor Andrea De Feis will also open another case, initially against persons unknown, for the crime of aiding and abetting . Investigators are investigating the possible role and involvement of other individuals who may have aided him, assisting in the preparation and execution of the escape. This action appears to have been anything but improvised. There may therefore have been a precise plan, hatched long ago , with someone who may have been waiting for the young inmate. The investigations primarily concern the relationships the suspect may have had in prison, with other inmates, and with relatives and friends outside . They will need to understand how he may have communicated with them. And they will also need to determine what role the parents played. Meanwhile, a recent mug shot has been released to the media, in the hope of generating useful leads.
Cavallari's ex-girlfriend, a 25-year-old who, as a minor, was also implicated in the theft investigation, was located in the past few hours and has been found to be completely unrelated. She was a regular visitor to the Modena area, where she lives and works, and apparently had no contact with the fugitive for some time , probably years. Furthermore, she never appears to have visited him in prison. Indeed, no one had seen her at his graduation ceremony or at the subsequent party, held at a club in the university area where the 26-year-old went with his family.
The statements of the parents, to whom the prisoner had been entrusted, will need to be examined in depth. They allegedly referred to the presence of a girlfriend whom Cavallari was supposed to meet after the party . Investigations will also be conducted into the granting of permission by the supervisory magistrate and any opinions requested for his release. This was the first benefit he received and included a rather long period of time outside the prison during the day: from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., when the discussion and graduation ceremony were scheduled for the morning .
