The images of Scala dei Turchi, the marvelous white marl cliff of Realmonte in the province of Agrigento, devastated by flows of red , had wounded the hearts of lovers of Sicily and beyond.

And now the carabinieri, a few days after the events, have managed to identify the perpetrators of the vandal raid that took place in the night between Friday and Saturday.

The crag, a candidate to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, had been smeared with red iron oxide powder, a material that can actually be easily removed with water. The choice perhaps anything but casual had made us think of a demonstrative gesture rather than a real attempt to damage the cliff.

The Prosecutor's Office of Agrigento had immediately opened a file, initially against unknown persons, for the hypothesis of the crime of damage to goods having landscape value. Now the Realmonte carabinieri and those of the Agrigento company, all coordinated by Major Marco La Rovere, have managed to shed full light on the identity of the perpetrators of the maxi damage.

Details have not been disclosed for the time being.
