A riot broke out in the afternoon in the Marassi prison in Genoa: several dozen prisoners came out of their cells and some reached the barrier that precedes the perimeter wall. Others climbed onto the roofs, reporting torture of a prisoner, which allegedly occurred yesterday by other prisoners.
Several departments of the penitentiary police intervened, and other law enforcement agencies were also present outside the prison.
The result was two injured officers taken to hospital, two treated on site and several cells devastated.
The protest then subsided: "Thanks to the intervention of over one hundred Penitentiary Police officers, many of whom came from other Ligurian prisons, the disturbances at the Genoa Marassi Prison have recently subsided," reports the general secretary of Uilpa Penitentiary Police, Gennarino De Fazio. "There is considerable damage to the ground floor of the second section, which also includes classrooms. Operations to make the penitentiary safe again are still underway."
