Around 700 flights were cancelled between August 8th and 11th due to the Etna eruption, including missed arrivals and departures and cancellations . Around 400 departures were canceled, and another 52, according to the SAC website, will be canceled today.

More than 250 flights have been rescheduled to other airports : of these, more than one hundred have been diverted since the beginning of the emergency to Comiso, around fifty, yesterday alone, to Palermo, and another 22 flights to Trapani.

SAC, the Catania airport management company, also announced that, "due to Mount Etna's eruptive activity and the associated release of volcanic ash into the atmosphere, the closure of the areas corresponding to the southwest aerial cloud (sector C1) and the closure of sector B3 have been extended ." Therefore, " all flight operations departing and arriving at Catania airport are suspended until 4:00 PM tomorrow ."

SAC urges passengers to "check the status of their flight with the airlines before going to the airport."
