«I have learned, by following for years the thread that links Aldo Moro to Piersanti Mattarella, and Piersanti Mattarella to Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, that Italian history never kills its best men out of weakness: it kills them out of excessive clarity .»
Sigfrido Ranucci wrote this on Facebook in a post titled "The Voice That Frightens." "They all die the same way," the journalist continues, "not so much from the bullet or the TNT, but from having seen, a moment before the others, the plan they were part of, and from having attempted, with the naiveté of those who still believe in the truth as a common good, to tell it out loud."
Sigfrido Ranucci has returned to the center of political debate in recent weeks, following the unexpected turn of events in the investigation into the attack he was the victim of on October 16, 2025. Investigators have placed Valter Lavitola, a man previously convicted of extortion and other crimes, under investigation—and arrested him last Monday . Lavitola, who over time became first a source and then a friend of the journalist, was arrested.
According to investigators, it was Lavitola himself who planned the attack on Ranucci, with the sole aim of increasing the journalist's notoriety in preparation for his eventual entry into politics.
Meanwhile, Lavitola's preliminary hearing has been underway since noon in Rebibbia prison . Upon entering the prison, the suspect's lawyer, Sergio Cola, simply stated that his client had not yet decided whether to exercise his right to remain silent before the investigating judge or to make a voluntary statement. Regarding the precautionary order, Cola added: "I'm keeping my assessments to myself. I'll explain later what they were and what my client's final decision was."
