Investigators have placed Valter Lavitola, a man previously convicted of extortion and other crimes, under investigation—and arrested him last Monday . Lavitola, who over time became first a source and then a friend of the journalist, was arrested.

According to investigators, it was Lavitola himself who planned the attack on Ranucci, with the sole aim of increasing the journalist's notoriety in preparation for his eventual entry into politics.

Meanwhile, Lavitola's preliminary hearing has been underway since noon in Rebibbia prison .
