Space for Latin - as an option - starting from middle school, abolition of geohistory in high school, centrality to the study of Italian literature, more space for history and the Italic peoples. And music is back.
The New National Guidelines for Schools are coming, that is, the new programs, developed by a Commission appointed by the Minister for Education, Giuseppe Valditara.
The changes, which will be introduced in the 2026-27 school year, were anticipated in an interview with Minister Valditara in Il Giornale.
Among the new features planned are the introduction of the possibility of including Latin in the curriculum starting from the second year of middle school , the abolition of geohistory in high school, a new centrality to the narration of what has happened in Italy from ancient times to today. And then, starting from elementary school, children will be introduced to music.
In high school, in fact, the will is to abolish geohistory, with the idea of developing history as a great narrative, "without burdening it with ideological superstructures", explains Minister Valditara, privileging the history of Italy, Europe, the West. Attention will focus in particular on the Italic peoples, the origins and events of ancient Greece and Rome, their civilizations, the first centuries of Christianity. "We must resume the great school of memory, with simpler texts at the beginning, even nursery rhymes, tongue twisters and more. Then already in elementary school the first hints of classical epic, Greek and Eastern mythology but also Nordic sagas. We must cultivate the imagination, the ability of children to be amazed, profound suggestions but without losing grammar and the study of the rule along the way. The culture of the rule begins with the study of grammar . In particular, it is important to transmit to the student, from the beginning, the awareness of the value of linguistic and formal correctness, of order and clarity in communication. Clarity must be presented as a form of self-control and also of a dutiful commitment towards others", concludes the minister, for whom there are no sovereignist intentions: "Our objective is a serious school, forward-looking and attentive to the critical education of our children. The revision of the national guidelines looks to them".
