Camillo Giannattasio, 57, resident in Carosino (Taranto), was served with a custodial remand order issued by the investigating judge of Brindisi for the murder of Brigadier Chief Carlo Legrottaglie, which occurred in Francavilla Fontana on June 12.

Giannattasio is considered seriously suspected, in collaboration with 59-year-old Michele Mastropietro, who died in a firefight with the police, of murder and resisting a public official. According to the prosecution, Giannattasio would have held "a conduct demonstrative" of the "sharing of the use of the gun" used to kill the soldier, and possessed other clandestine weapons.

According to the prosecution, it was Mastropietro who shot Legrottaglie, and was then killed during a subsequent firefight with the police while he was fleeing with his accomplice Giannattasio, who was captured by the police. In a note signed by the acting public prosecutor of Brindisi, Antonio Negro, released by the Carabinieri, it is noted that the investigators found a second semi-automatic pistol and a large number of bullets in the suspects' car.

Therefore Giannattasio was reached "by a precautionary measure also because he was seriously suspected of receiving, possessing and carrying illegally in a public place two clandestine common firearms, both of which were deprived of their respective registration marks". Furthermore, the investigating judge of Brindisi examined Giannattasio's position in relation to the arsenal of weapons and ammunition found in the commercial activity (hardware store) and in the home of the suspect, together with other instruments useful for committing crimes against property. For illegal possession, Giannattasio had already been reached by a precautionary measure ordered by the investigating judge of Taranto, then transferred to Brindisi for territorial jurisdiction.

The investigating judge of Brindisi confirmed the measure. The prosecutor's note adds that the responsibilities will be clarified by "the outcome of the ballistic comparisons, to be carried out between the weapon owned by Mastropietro - believed to be the one from which the bullet that proved fatal for Brigadier Legrottaglie was fired - and the warhead extracted from the soldier's body; further investigative checks and the interrogation of the suspect". The Taranto prosecutor's office is instead proceeding with the investigations into the second firefight that took place in the countryside of Grottaglie in which Mastropietro died. Two officers are accused of manslaughter following excessive negligent use of legitimate weapons, but they are also injured parties in a parallel proceeding for attempted murder and serious personal injury against Giannattasio - in collaboration with Mastropietro.
