On the boat, together with other migrants, a very young mother , just 19 years old, originally from the Ivory Coast, with her 20-day-old baby in her arms. The newborn suffers from respiratory problems, and the parents hope to arrive in Italy to be able to get it treated. However, the father does not leave, he stays in Tunisia, perhaps because traveling together would not be economically sustainable for the young family: and so the bundle is entrusted to the mother. Unfortunately, the journey turns out to be harsher than the two parents could have imagined, and the child can't make it : the cold of the night takes him away , and upon arrival in Italy the diagnosis of the doctors who rush to the Favarolo pier it will be " death from hypothermia ".
A new drama, therefore, which is added to that of the other corpses that the waters of the sea continue incessantly to return along the coasts of Sicily, where 640 migrants have landed in the last 36 hours .
"It is a constant receiving calls from the police to inform me that there are corpses . I seem to attend a war bulletin and what worries me is that it is becoming an everyday occurrence, in the indifference of Europe ", the words of the mayor of Lampedusa and Linosa, Filippo Mannino . "It is hard to work in these conditions, first of all humanly and then because our municipality cannot bear this burden , also due to the lack of human, instrumental and financial resources." The mayor wrote to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and to the Minister of Internal Matteo Piantedosi to ask for an urgent meeting. "Long-lasting and feasible solutions to the problems that have a direct impact on this territory must be sought - added Mannino -. I ask for listening and solidarity to the central government ".
Meanwhile, the body of the 20-day-old baby was transferred to the mortuary of the Cala Pisana cemetery, next to his other four coffins of as many migrants. The Prosecutor of Agrigento, with his acting Salvatore Vella, has already ordered the clearance for the burial of the corpses, while the baby's mother has been transferred , as well as the traveling companions, to the hotspot in the Imbriacola district .
