The documents on the terrible state of the Mestre flyover where the bus massacre took place, costing the lives of 21 people, had already been on the table of the Venice Prosecutor's Office for more than a year.

The material, reports Il Gazzettino, had been acquired by the judicial offices on the basis of press articles reporting the state of the artefact and declarations by the councilor for Public Works Renato Boraso who requested urgent intervention.

The magistrates had acquired from the Municipality of Venice all the documents relating to the situation of the overpass and the projects for its consolidation and restructuring, including those on the reconstruction of the lateral portions. Not a real investigation, no file had been opened: just an exploratory act.

«I am not aware if there has been a file in the Prosecutor's Office since 2021, but I confirm that concerns about the state of health of that overpass have led the traffic offices to work intensely, until today there is clearly an open construction site for safety, from 4 September", explains the Venetian councilor Renato Boraso.

«Making safety - reiterated Boraso - and installing a new guardrail is a complex job: I have to have a compliant platform, the existing one must be widened and reinforced, and this is what was already being done in the first part of the flyover . Unfortunately, in Italy there are so many formal steps that public works are only speeded up with the administration of commissioners. On the issues of safety of bridges, roads, but also of public buildings, we must find procedural formulas such that a work can be contracted within a year."
