This weekend, traffic on the Anas network is expected to increase steadily as drivers return to the major cities of central and northern Italy. According to estimates from the Anas Road Mobility Observatory , 12,255,000 vehicle journeys are expected.

Viabilità Italia has announced a red flag this afternoon, Friday, August 22nd, tomorrow morning, Saturday, August 23rd, and throughout Sunday, August 24th : a sharp increase in travel from holiday resorts to major urban centers throughout Italy. Due to the significant increase in traffic, Anas (National Roads Authority) has increased staffing throughout the country and reduced the number of construction sites.

Until September 8, 1,392 construction sites will be closed or suspended, approximately 83% of the active ones (1,672).

The increase in traffic could affect the country's main arteries: the A2 "Autostrada del Mediterraneo" which crosses Campania, Basilicata and Calabria; the state roads 106 "Jonica" and 18 "Tirrena Inferiore" in Calabria; the A19 "Palermo-Catania" and A29 "Palermo-Mazara del Vallo" motorways in Sicily; the state road 131 "Carlo Felice" in Sardinia ; the state road 148 "Pontina" in Lazio, a particularly busy artery which, together with the state road 7 "Appia", ensures connections between Rome and the tourist resorts of southern Lazio; the E45 route (SS675 and SS3 bis) which passes through Umbria, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and connects the north-east with central Italy; the SS1 Aurelia (Lazio, Tuscany and Liguria), the SS16 Adriatica (Puglia, Molise, Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto). To the north, the RA13 and RA14 motorway links in Friuli-Venezia Giulia towards the border crossings, the state road 36 "of Lake Como and Spluga" in Lombardy, the state road 45 "of Val Trebbia" in Liguria, the state road 26 "of the Aosta Valley" and the state road 309 "Romea" between Emilia-Romagna and Veneto and the state road 51 "of Alemagna" in Veneto.

The traffic ban for heavy vehicles is in effect tomorrow, Saturday, August 23, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday, August 24, from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Anas has approximately 2,500 roadside personnel on rotation, including technical and operational staff, as well as staff from the Territorial Operations Rooms and the National Situation Room, to ensure real-time traffic monitoring 24/7. For information on immovable roadworks, Anas invites travelers to consult the Summer Exodus page on the stradeanas.it website before traveling (link https://www.stradeanas.it/it/esodoestivo).

"Italians are preparing to return home from vacation to resume their daily lives and work," CEO Claudio Andrea Gemme said. "I urge everyone to drive carefully: it's essential to ensure road safety. The longing for the end of the holidays and the desire to quickly return to your destination can lead to risky behavior: according to our latest research on driving styles, 51% of Italians believe it's not dangerous to exceed the speed limit. 11.4% believe that "other things can be done" while driving, while only 55.4% believe that road accidents are caused by incorrect behavior. Numerous trips are concentrated at this time, even at the local level, with heavy traffic, especially on state roads near residential areas. I urge everyone," the CEO concluded, "to respect speed limits and plan their trips. Above all, I recommend never driving with your cell phone; everything else can wait. Nothing is as urgent as safeguarding your own life and the lives of others."
