Two chests containing gold coins, like in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.

This is the treasure he was looking for, and according to him he also found, Davide Pecorelli , the Umbrian-Tuscan businessman and former football referee in Arezzo who had been reported dead since January in Albania, where he had staged his death because "chased by creditors ”, and found shipwrecked in recent weeks near the island of Montecristo.

The man explained to investigators that he had found the two chests, full of gold coins dating back to the 5th century AD stolen in 2019 from the San Mamiliano museum in Sovana (Grosseto), but that he "never came into possession". The treasure "is in the place that I have indicated to the prosecutor, they know everything, they also have detailed maps of the places where I have been in my research in those days when I reached the island. However, I have cataloged everything and communicated to the judiciary, "he said.

THE INVESTIGATION - The story, however, is still obscure and the 45-year-old charges of receiving stolen goods but also substitution of person. The evidential seizure of the material found inside the room of a hotel on the island of Giglio has also been ordered.

That is: about twenty lists on photographic paper with details of ancient coins, three maps of the island of Montecristo, a book of the Divine Comedy and a key with the words “garage Porto Santo Stefano”, together with other objects not considered of value.

THE RECONSTRUCTION - According to the reconstructions, Pecorelli fled to Albania to seek his fortune after the crash in Italy. Failing the attempt, he would have staged his murder with the help of a priest, and finally he would have reappeared in Italy in the waters of the island of Montecristo where he would have gone to look for the treasure.

“I was persecuted by creditors and employees - he explained to La Nazione -. There must have been fifty of them. I was without a euro. Missing for petrol ". In Albania" I looked for one last chance: first in Shkodra and Tirana trying to sell hair products and a machine worth 100 thousand euros ". Then he went to Puke: "I looked for a parish priest to confess and take my life", he says. The cleric, however, would have given him the idea of staging the murder, throwing the car into a cliff and using bones taken from a common ossuary.

Then he moved to Vlora: "I have been there, but since May 7. The question of the treasure had arisen with the religious community. I knew that I would have to face 27 miles on the open sea at Giglio, almost madness, so I had to be prepared" . On September 12, my return to Italy: "For the treasure - says the entrepreneur -. I arrived in Rome by pilgrims' bus. I took the money from the ATM and went to Grosseto and then to Giglio. On Tuesday I rented the dinghy and I made the trip to Montecristo ".

Pecorelli then claims to have actually found the treasure: "I looked for an expert in numismatics, he said 'it's incredible what you found'. On 23 September we had an appointment at a hotel in Arezzo. But they caught me".
