The lawyers of the NGO Sos Humanity are ready to present an appeal to the TAR of Catania in relation to the Humanity 1 ship which, loaded with migrants, docked at the Etna port. 35 of these were not allowed to disembark - while the other 144, including women, children and the frail, were welcomed by the structures in the area - with the instructions given to Captain Joachim Ebeling to leave the quay. Instead, he replied by announcing: “ I will stay in Catania together with the survivors until they disembark .” “I cannot leave the port of Catania - explained Ebeling speaking with journalists - we have to find a solution here. It would be against the law to go away with the survivors, as my lawyer explained to me. The survivors left on board are in a state of depression and apathy, we are deeply concerned about their mental health. It is difficult to explain to them what is happening and it is something that I myself cannot understand because it is against the law. "

In particular, the NGO disputes the fact that " selective and partial landing , such as that proposed by the Italian authorities", is not to be considered "legal according to maritime law conventions" and recalls that "the government should take all necessary measures to ensure that survivors remain on board for as short a time as possible, as established by the Guidelines on the Treatment of Persons Rescued at Sea ".
