He had gone to Mandello al Lario with friends for a lake trip and died there, in the waters of Lake Como where he had dived, in a dangerous area with prohibition signs, as the mayor of the Lecco town, Riccardo Fasoli, pointed out.

The fifteen-year-old, of foreign origin and resident in the Milan area, decided to go swimming by diving from a pier in front of the Moto Guzzi rowing club, despite the water temperature of around 13 degrees, and did not resurface.

His friends immediately raised the alarm , and Coast Guard vessels and a firefighter helicopter, departing from Malpensa Airport with divers on board, responded to the scene. They recovered the body from a depth of ten meters. Paramedics were also present, but were only able to confirm the boy's death. "Something must be done," the mayor wrote on Facebook.

"We put up signs, staff, and local police. But here we need to explain," he added, "that the rules exist because they're there to protect everyone. Everyone's lives. Social media, television, and everything else teach people to break the rules, to be against the law. Today, a young man lost his life, looking for fun, in a dangerous place, with no access, and in a lake that, if you don't know how to swim well in fresh water, is deadly."

This isn't the first time it's happened . On August 15, two years ago, eleven-year-old Fatou Thiao, a girl from Bulciago, lost her life after getting into trouble in the water with her two little sisters and a friend. Some swimmers saved the three girls, but Fatou was swept away by the current, and her body wasn't found until the next day. "Something needs to be done in the homes and communities where these kids set out in the morning, for an afternoon of fun that often begins with the expectation of becoming unruly. And it doesn't take much," the mayor concluded. "Very little."
