The horses have been assigned to the 10 contrade that will run in the Palio di Siena on August 16th. The Lupa contradaioli are jubilant, having been assigned Diodoro, a horse that has won two Palios out of three races, including the last one in July, with Tittia Atzeni in the saddle. The Aquila and Nicchio contradaioli are also jumping for joy, having been assigned Benitos and Anda, respectively, and Bola, both winners in Piazza del Campo.

Five horses with at least one career behind them— Ares Elce, Donrodrigo, Arestetulesu, Viso d'Angelo, and Canarinu— were drawn, respectively, to Istrice, Torre, Chiocciola, Onda, and Selva. Two horses were debutants: Euskaldi in the Giraffa and Diamante Sauro in the Oca.

The first horse-jockey pairings will be official this evening when the first test is scheduled for 7:15 pm.
