A year-long relationship rife with threats and violence that continued even after they were reported. Police arrested him on Saturday evening after the latest attack on his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend in Como, but, as happened in recent days in a similar case in Varese, he too was released . Around 2:30 a.m., a patrol car driving through the Camerlata neighborhood, just outside the city, came across a group of people in a parking lot helping a young woman lying on the ground.
Her body bore clear signs of beatings, and her ex-boyfriend, a 25-year-old Ecuadorian, was lying beside her, motionless and visibly intoxicated. When he realized it was a police car approaching, he got back behind the wheel, started the engine, and tried to escape, unsuccessfully. To reconstruct what had happened moments earlier, the officers relied on the testimonies of those who were present: several passing motorists reported seeing him throw open the door, grab her by the hair, throw her to the ground, and savagely beat her, attempting to drag her across the asphalt.
Over the next two hours, this reconstruction was confirmed by the victim, a Como resident and also of South American origin, who had meanwhile been taken to the hospital for treatment. Not only did she reconstruct the escalation of violence that Saturday evening—detailing it in a report—but she also described a series of similar incidents dating back to the past year, which were subsequently confirmed by further investigations at the police station. The young Ecuadorian man was found to have a criminal record for the exact same behavior, always against the same woman. Arrested and taken to prison on charges of mistreatment and assault (and charged with driving under the influence at liberty), the 25-year-old appeared in court in Como that afternoon for a fast-track hearing.
His lawyer requested and obtained a postponement of the proceedings, which was adjourned until November. In the meantime, the judge released him from prison, imposing, as his only requirement, a ban on him approaching places frequented by his ex.
