A large column of dark smoke stands out above Venice this morning.
Shortly before 10 a.m., the alarm went off at the lagoon fire station due to a fire that had broken out on the roof of the Serbian pavilion at the Biennale dei Giardini, in the historic center.
The art exhibition venue was brought under control thanks to the rapid intervention of emergency responders, but the flames continued to rage even after the initial extinguishing efforts due to the strong gusts of wind that have been blowing across the lagoon since Tuesday night. The strong winds rekindled the burning and cleared materials, requiring the firefighters to intervene several times.
Initial investigations indicate that the exterior roofing caught fire, without anyone being injured and without any damage extending to the furnishings, the exhibition, or other surrounding structures. Several firefighters are on site, with several dispatches. Firefighters and officials are under control and are preventing the blaze from spreading. In support of the emergency services, Venice local police boat patrols have also been dispatched, and are still inspecting the Biennale.
