Eleven-year-old boy dies after being hit by garbage truck while riding his bicycle.

The 11-year-old boy who was hit by a garbage truck while riding his bicycle in Reggio Emilia shortly after 2 p.m. has died.

The child's death was declared at the Santa Maria Nuova hospital where he had arrived in desperate conditions.

According to reports, an off-duty medical worker was on the scene at the time of the accident and attempted to perform CPR and other resuscitation maneuvers. An ambulance then arrived and immediately took him to the hospital, but the child died.

The boy had just finished elementary school.

Local police are working to reconstruct the incident and determine responsibilities.
