Elena Cecchettin: «There was no stalking against Giulia? They don't care about women»

Giulia Cecchettin was killed "not only" by the "violent hand" of Filippo Turetta but by the "justification and indifference" towards all those signs that anticipate feminicides. A very harsh reaction that Elena Cecchettin entrusts to Instagram stories to comment on the sentence that condemned her sister's 23-year-old ex-boyfriend to life imprisonment , without however recognizing the aggravating circumstances of cruelty and stalking.
Not recognizing that aggravating circumstance, says Giulia's sister, means not only disrespecting the family. It is "yet another confirmation that institutions don't care about women." You are a victim "only if you are dead, what you suffer in life you manage on your own." And instead, gender violence "is not only present where there is a knife or a fist, but much earlier," is her reasoning, which ends with a question: "How many women will not be able to save themselves from their tormentor if not even in the most obvious cases is guilt acknowledged?"
Words that come on the very day that her father, Gino Cecchettin, makes a pact with the institutions to ensure that other fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters do not have to mourn other Giulias. At the Ministry of Education and Merit, Giulia's father and Giuseppe Valditara, after a face-to-face meeting lasting over an hour, sign a memorandum of understanding that will allow the Foundation created in the name of the student to carry out its "mission" in schools , to promote the culture of respect and education.
The agreement also includes the organization of meetings for young people, the creation of a joint working group and the verification of the results obtained. All to ensure that the culture of respect becomes a common heritage. This is precisely what Cecchettin proposes with the foundation named after Giulia: "It is the principle of cooperation - he said - towards common objectives. I think that we were the first to give a sign of respect for people, with this meeting. Today we met to talk about an existing social problem, from femicide to violence against women to mutual respect between the sexes. We will work on this".
Filippo Turetta, who spent the first night after being sentenced to the maximum penalty in Verona, should have also worked tirelessly. To the volunteers at the Verona prison, the boy appeared "destroyed" and "with obvious psychological problems". He continues to be detained in the third section - the one for serious crimes - in a cell with other prisoners; he doesn't work, he attends an advanced English course, he reads books, and it seems he is learning to play an instrument. Every now and then he meets with his parents and brother. But the maximum penalty - as the prosecutor and various lawyers also pointed out in court - does not mean "never ending the sentence".
The Court of Assizes of Venice has not ordered daytime isolation and, according to the law, in case of exemplary behavior after 10 years (but one is already served, so it's 9) he can be granted permission to attend professional training courses inside or outside the prison. After 26 years - 21 if the behavior is irreproachable - it will be possible to obtain semi-liberty. All of this, however, after the examination of the Surveillance Court, and after the sentence has become definitive.
