A 20-year-old university student living in Vertemate con Minoprio (Como), Noemi Fiordilino, died last night after being hit by a hit-and-run driver in Lurago Marinone, in the Como area.

The Carabinieri have arrested for aggravated road homicide, failure to provide assistance and simulation of a crime a 32-year-old man living in Fenegrò, an electrician by profession, with a previous complaint for drunk driving, who according to initial investigations had gotten behind the wheel not only with a blood alcohol level almost three times over the legal limit but even with his right leg in a cast, the result of a fracture suffered a few days ago. A story with incredible implications if what has been reconstructed so far by the Carabinieri is confirmed.

Noemi was returning home with her boyfriend when their car hit a small animal that was crossing the road . It was 2:30. The boys pulled over and stopped to make sure what had happened and to check for any damage to the vehicle, and when they noticed that an injured rabbit was lying on the edge of the road they tried to contact a veterinary clinic that operates 24 hours a day.

While her partner was looking for a number, she was standing next to the animal on the side of the road. The Volkswagen Golf driven by the electrician with his foot in a cast came out of the darkness at a presumably very high speed, hitting her head on and throwing her about fifty meters away, probably without the young woman realizing what was happening. The car then quickly drove away as if nothing had happened. The rescue efforts on the spot unfortunately proved useless: the 118 resuscitators - who found her in cardiac arrest - tried everything they could to stabilize her condition before transferring her to the hospital. Transported by helicopter to the emergency room of Sant'Anna in Como, she was declared dead a few minutes after her arrival.

At the same time, on the straight of Lurago Marinone, the scene of the tragedy, the Carabinieri began their search for the hit-and-run car, based on a license plate number that allowed them to show up at the suspect's home in Fenegrò before dawn. The father of a child, the man is not married and still lives with his parents . His first reaction was to deny it. He reported to the military (it seems he was asleep when they arrived) that he had already been in bed for a few hours and that the car had been stolen from him the previous evening, unaware that in the meantime another patrol of the force had already tracked down the Golf parked in a rest area not far from his home. The first test to verify his state of alcoholic alteration gave a positive result, 1.42 grams of alcohol per liter of blood. Inevitable outcome: by order of the prosecutor Giulia Ometto, on duty at the Como Public Prosecutor's Office, the man was arrested a few hours later and transferred to the Bassone prison in Como, where in the next few days he will have the opportunity to provide his version of the facts to the investigating judge, during the interrogation to validate the arrest.

If found guilty, he faces up to seven years in prison and up to 30 years of driving disqualification, the so-called "driving license life sentence".
