In one week, the number of patients admitted to Italian hospitals due to Covid increased by 19% , both in ordinary and intensive wards.

The greatest increase is found in hospitalizations "for Covid", that is, hospitalizations with respiratory syndromes typical of the infection, + 24.5% . On the other hand, the number of people hospitalized "with Covid" who came to hospital to treat other diseases and tested positive for the swab despite not having the symptoms of coronavirus increased less ( + 13.7% ).

The data are collected through the sentinel hospitals of the Federation of health and hospital companies (Fiaso).

In intensive care, a no vax rate of 19% persists, while among the vaccinated, 80% took the last dose for more than four months .

However, pediatric hospitalizations have even doubled in a week , and mostly children between 0 and 4 years of age end up in hospital, which represent 78% of the children hospitalized. The under 18 admitted to sentinel hospitals increased by 84%, going from 51 on 28 June to 94 on 5 July.

“The great contagiousness of this variant - explains the president Fiaso, Giovanni Migliore - also affects children, who are not exempt from developing Covid disease as shown by the growing data in pediatric hospitals and pediatric wards. More attention must be paid to infants and children ".

"These data - comments Alberto Villani, head of General Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases of the Bambino Gesù Hospital - confirm that the increase in the circulation of the virus involves the developmental age with methods and characteristics comparable to those of the general population: increase in contagiousness and of the number of infected with symptoms and consequent increase in hospital admissions ".
