Terrible accident this morning in Florence , on the construction site of an Esselunga supermarket , where a collapse occurred.

The alarm on the outskirts of the city , in via Mariti, in the area of the former military bakery, where the construction of the new building is underway.

Rescuers and law enforcement arrived immediately: at the moment the toll is that of two workers dead and three pulled alive from the rubble, but a search is being made for others missing . There would be two other workers under the rubble .

Firefighters and police were on site.

The accident was caused by the collapse of a floor caused by the failure of a reinforced concrete beam, as specified by the firefighters.

In the meantime , the Florence prosecutor's office has opened a case, currently without suspects, for negligent collapse and multiple manslaughter . The construction site ended up under seizure. The ASL technicians are listening to construction site staff.

At the Careggi hospital the three workers extracted from the rubble "aged 37, 48 and 51", the words of the President of the Region Giani. Who specifies: « I spoke to one of them and was reassured of his stable clinical conditions. The other two are in intensive and semi-intensive care with a reserved prognosis although there is no imminent danger to their lives - he added -. In Careggi everything is ready in case we need to intervene immediately after the extraction of the four workers who are still missing."

Cgil-Cisl and Uil have called a two-hour general strike for Wednesday 21 February : «We appeal to institutions, the world of business and politics, control bodies, no more deaths at work!», say the unions in a joint note.

A day of national and regional mourning has also been announced for tomorrow .
