The "Italian" migrant centers in Albania are once again at the center of political controversy.

The European Court of Justice has in fact affirmed that it is up to judges to "control" the list of safe countries of origin of irregular migrants , specifically with reference to the transfer protocol signed by Italy and Albania.

The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, expressed surprise at this ruling. "Once again," Palazzo Chigi announced, "jurisdiction, this time European, is claiming jurisdiction that does not belong to it, in the face of political responsibilities. The Court's decision weakens policies to combat mass illegal immigration and defend national borders."

The Court's decision was welcomed by the National Association of Magistrates , which had previously highlighted the same conclusions: "No one was rowing against the government. An interpretation had been proposed by the Italian judges that the Court of Justice of the European Union now declares to be correct," the magistrates wrote.

Meanwhile, the opposition is attacking, with the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement speaking of the "clear failure of the Albanian model."

"Giorgia Meloni had assured us that the centers in Albania would work," said Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein . Instead, they are "inhumane," and "even the courts say so. Not only do they trample on fundamental rights, which is the most important thing, but—Schlein added—they are also a waste of public resources."
