The Council of Ministers, in an urgent and ad hoc meeting, conferred Italian citizenship on Indi Gregory, an 8-month-old English baby seriously ill from a mitochondrial pathology deemed incurable by doctors across the Channel.

In recent days, the High Court in London denied the little girl the possibility of moving to Italy to continue to keep her alive with the support of machines. The little girl, who was reportedly unplugged at 3pm Italian time , can therefore be transferred and admitted to the Bambino Gesù hospital in Rome.

The granting of Italian citizenship, it is explained, is «pursuant to art. 9, paragraph 2, of law 5 February 1992, n. 91", we read in the convocation of the Council of Ministers. A choice, as far as we know, motivated in consideration of the exceptional interest of the national community in ensuring further therapeutic developments for the minor.

Baby Jesus has long offered his availability to assist her, but British justice has denied the possibility of transfer from the Queen Medical Center in Nottingham , where the little girl is hospitalized.

According to British doctors, the disease is incurable and the therapies Indi receives cause her "unnecessary pain" , hence the judges' approval for the suspension of therapies and life support. But the little girl's parents want to keep a light of hope lit, in their opinion the little girl is not suffering. For this reason they had asked the judges for the transfer to Rome, but the court had opposed it. Now, with Italian citizenship, there are no more obstacles: and Indi Gregory can arrive in Rome with a special flight .
