A six-month-old baby girl, affected by a rare malformation of the biliary tract, was saved thanks to the transplant of a part of her liver, donated by her mother, and the autotransplant of the portal vein, the venous trunk that collects blood from the digestive system and transports it to the liver, replaced by the jugular vein taken from the baby's neck.
The exceptional operation, which lasted thirteen hours, was performed "for the first time", claims the City of Health and Science of Turin, by the team of Professor Renato Romagnoli .
The mother was discharged after six days and the functional recovery of the transplanted liver in the little girl is defined as "optimal" by the health workers , to the point that she has already begun the nutritional rehabilitation phase.
