Chiara Petrolini, the 22-year-old from Vignale di Traversetolo, in the province of Parma, allegedly buried her first baby in the garden as soon as she gave birth, because "she wanted to keep him close to her". For this reason, the investigators, having discovered the first remains in August and suspecting a second pregnancy, went back to digging in the ground, finding the remains of the other baby.

This is what the provincial commander of the Carabinieri of Parma, Colonel Andrea Pagliaro , explained after the arrest of the young woman , decided by the Prosecutor's Office, on charges of double homicide. When the bones were found "we were incredulous" , the officer admitted during a press conference with the prosecutor Alfonso D'Avino .

The investigation continues to reveal new, horrifying details: "Chiara had already decided that the baby would not survive birth and the entire course of the pregnancy appears to be littered with clues that lead to this terrible reality," the prosecutor wrote in the statement on Chiara's arrest.

As after the first birth, continues the head of the investigators, it was «once again a pregnancy hidden, apparently from the whole world, a home birth alone, without any medical assistance, with the subsequent disintegration of the placenta in the toilet and burial of the body in the garden» .

Again, on May 12, 2023 , when Petrolini allegedly gave birth to her first child (the second was born on August 7 ), her parents and brother were out at a dance recital . And with her own hands the girl allegedly dug a hole to bury the little body.

During her pregnancies, the investigators further explain, the young woman had "conduct incompatible with her condition" and this emerged "above all from the information gathered from friends". The girl, in fact, "never disdained the use of electronic cigarettes and tobacco, even accompanied by the intake of alcoholic beverages ; lastly, after labor had in fact already begun, and on the eve of childbirth, Chiara did not disdain the use of marijuana either ", the prosecutor stated, underlining that these elements are "significant" for the contestation of premeditation.

When the young woman was asked by investigators if she wanted to keep her children, she said yes: "She said that, when she returned from the United States, she would tell her parents that she was pregnant."

For the first pregnancy Chiara "said that the baby was stillborn, and that she simply took him and buried him." For the second birth she said the same thing: that he was stillborn, so she would have cut the cord and buried him.

However, the tests also revealed that the baby born on August 7 was born alive, as he had breathed. Death was due to hemorrhagic shock from cutting the umbilical cord "in the absence of adequate mechanical constriction of the umbilical vessels".

Prosecutor D'Avino also explained that on the night between August 7 and 8, after giving birth, Chiara Petrolini's boyfriend slept at her house. Then the two met again at the barracks, and when he realized that the child found on the 9th in the garden was his, their relationship ended. But how did the young man not notice the girl's pregnancy? "We don't know, it's one of the things that leaves one perplexed about this story ," the magistrate replied.

As for why she kept her pregnancies a secret, Petrolini justified herself by saying that she was afraid of other people's "judgement."
