Salvatore Vespertino , the 38-year-old anarchist originally from Nuoro , on the run since July 2023 and arrested on February 15 in Madrid by the Spanish National Police , was handed over to the Italian authorities today at Fiumicino airport.

Vespertino had been definitively sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment for wounding the police bomb disposal expert Mario Vece , who was hit on New Year's Eve 2017 by the explosion of a device placed in front of the "Il Bargello" bookshop in Florence , a commercial activity believed to be close to Casapound. In the explosion of the bomb, the bomb disposal expert lost a hand and an eye.

The 38-year-old will now have to serve a residual sentence of 5 years, 6 months and 1 day of imprisonment in Rebibbia (considering the subtraction of the time suffered while serving his pre-trial detention) for the crimes of illegal possession of weapons, grievous bodily harm and damage.

The delivery procedures involved personnel from the International Police Cooperation Service, the Central Directorate of Prevention Police, the Digos of Florence and the Polaria of Fiumicino.

Salvatore Vespertino had been identified as the person responsible for the bomb attack thanks to a trace of DNA left on the device and detected following meticulous and painstaking analysis by the Scientific Police, also starting from the elements that emerged following intense investigative work by the Florentine Digos and the personnel of the Central Directorate of the Prevention Police.
