They swapped biopsy slides, so they removed the jawbone of a healthy person, convinced that he had a tumor .
The episode, reported by Corriere della Sera, apparently occurred at the Umberto I hospital in Rome and the patient, a 35-year-old man, suffered facial paralysis .
A case has been opened on the incident. The prosecutor Eleonora Fini is investigating following the complaint for serious injuries by the man, who had the DNA of the biological material checked by a laboratory of the Catholic University.
The episode dates back to last May, when the patient went to the Eastman Institute, a dental clinic at the Polyclinic, to remove a wisdom tooth and a cyst. The cyst was sent to the laboratory for the usual histological examination and in June the doctors told the 35-year-old that he had a high-grade malignant osteosarcoma. The operation took place on July 22, and on September 9 he was informed that the new histological examination on the removed bone was negative .
So the 35-year-old, suspicious, takes the slides to the Catholic University for a new test: "On October 25, the response arrived, the DNA is not mine," he explains. "I no longer have a jaw and I don't have the tumor, but someone else is sick. Very sick."
