Two parents were arrested by the Carabinieri of Rimini for having forced their daughter, who was just over 18, to accept an arranged marriage in her homeland, in Bangladesh, but also for having locked her up at home, beaten her and drugged her .
The Carabinieri of the Rimini investigative unit executed last night a precautionary custody order, issued by the investigating judge Raffaele Deflorio, for house arrest for the mother, 42, and the father, 55, both Bangladeshi citizens resident in Rimini .
The young girl was 7 years old when she arrived in Italy, last December , with the excuse of her sick grandmother, she was forced to travel to Bangladesh, where her parents had arranged for her to meet a man 10 years older than her who was supposed to become her husband .
The girl, who was also in love with a 23-year-old fellow Italian living in Forlì, had repeatedly refused, but once she arrived in Dhaka, her relatives took away her documents and credit card. Constantly monitored, threatened, and abused, until she was forced into an arranged marriage, her life had been completely turned upside down, so much so that the young woman had been forced to take pregnancy-promoting drugs and tranquilizers , in order to break her will.
The young woman, forced to endure abuse, had managed to secretly take the contraceptive pill . Thanks to a friend, she had managed to contact the women's health department's counseling center and a volunteer at an anti-violence center, and through her, the Carabinieri and the Italian prosecutor's office.
The turning point came when, given the difficulty in getting pregnant, her parents allowed her to return to Italy for a while. Last April, after landing at Bologna Airport with her parents, the girl was immediately taken into the care of the Carabinieri and taken to an undisclosed location. Her parents, however, were located at their residence and placed under house arrest , at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
