The short holiday period that a 47-year-old Ukrainian engineer had decided to spend with some family members in Crotone ended in tragedy.

Yesterday afternoon he was on the beach when he was attacked by a swarm of wasps, to which he was allergic, and knowing the serious risks he tried to escape by jumping into the sea. In reality he wasn't stung but the fear was so intense that it caused him to have a heart attack, which proved fatal.

The swimmers raised the alarm. Recovering the body was difficult due to the presence of wasps and some rescuers were stung. The rescuers initially thought it was anaphylactic shock, but inspection of the body did not reveal any puncture wounds. The hypothesis of the police, who are investigating what happened, is that the engineer died of a heart attack or cardiac arrest caused by the fear of being attacked by the swarm knowing he was allergic.

Today the magistrate on duty at the Public Prosecutor's Office carried out an inspection on the beach. This morning, the mayor of Crotone Vincenzo Voce ordered the ban on the stretch of beach where the tragedy occurred. The mayor, in fact, was forced to issue an order prohibiting the use of the beach after the firefighters of the Crotone Provincial Command informed the Municipality of the impossibility of proceeding with a complete clean-up of the insects since the wasps had not made its nest only in the vegetation near the beach but also in holes in the sand.
