A day to remember in Assisi , where the remains of Saint Francis were displayed for the first time in the Lower Basilica that bears his name. The first pilgrims began arriving at 5:00 a.m., as Giulio Cesareo, director of the Sacred Convent's communications office, also announced.

For a month, until March 22nd and in the context of the eighth centenary of his death (1226-2026), the faithful and pilgrims will be able to pause in prayer before the body of the Saint, placed in the Lower Church in front of the altar, in an atmosphere of meditation and silence.

"The emotion is very high, the faithful feel the closeness of Francis' presence," Cesareo himself declared, emphasizing how the organization was studied down to the smallest detail to ensure safety and order.

Access to the Lower Basilica was through designated routes and checks, with metal detectors and dedicated staff. The orderly and silent queue allowed every pilgrim to approach the shrine containing the remains of the Saint.

Over 18,000 people are expected today (Sunday, February 22).

Meanwhile, in the Upper Basilica , the celebration of Holy Mass was held, presided over by Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime , in the presence of civil and religious authorities, including the President of the Umbria Region, Stefania Proietti.
