Cagliari , Catania and Rimini are the provinces in which, from the first light of dawn, the anti-mafia operation of the carabinieri called "Burnt Earth" takes place against a Randazzo clan , which investigators believe is part of the Laudani mafia clan.

There are more than 200 soldiers in action to carry out the precautionary custody orders issued by the investigating judge of Catania, the suspects are more than 30: the accusations, for various reasons, are those of mafia-type association, extortion, association aimed at the trafficking of drugs, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition and participation in violation of home aggravated by violence against objects by fire. The aggravating circumstance of the mafia method has also been contested.

During the investigations coordinated by the Catania District Anti-Mafia Directorate, the members of the mafia group operating in the Randazzese were identified, and hypotheses of political-mafia electoral exchange emerged with reference to the municipal elections of 2018 and interference by the group on the municipal administration and in particular on three current and past representatives of the Municipality of Randazzo, namely Francesco Giovanni Emanuele Sgroi, at the time of the investigations and still mayor in office, Carmelo Tindaro Scalisi, former municipal councilor and current president of the municipal council and Marco Crimi Stigliolo, municipal councilor in the previous administration, also led by the mayor.

The “responsible for the Randazzo area”, Salvatore “Turi” Sangani, area contact person for Paolo Di Mauro, who died in the course of the investigation and top figure of the Laudani for the entire Ionian-Etna area, is also in the sights.

The investigative activity would also have documented extortion against entrepreneurs in the Catania area, a flourishing trafficking in cocaine, hashish and marijuana .
