In July 2024, a plot to kill Pope Francis was foiled.
This is what emerges – as reported by Il Piccolo – from an investigation that led to the arrest of Hasan Uzun, a 46-year-old Turkish man, held in solitary confinement in prison.
The attack was apparently planned during a visit by the Pope, who died on April 21, to Trieste , where the forty-six-year-old is being held.
According to investigations, the plan was apparently devised by a Turkish organization linked to ISIS Khorasan. After his extradition from the Netherlands, Uzun spent several days in prison in Milan before being transferred to Trieste.
In Trieste, on the eve of Pope Francis's visit, a gun and several bullets were found inside an abandoned suitcase in a bar near the train station. Investigations into this discovery led to the 46-year-old being arrested in the Netherlands by Interpol and subsequently extradited to Italy.
However, according to the Trieste Police Headquarters , "no evidence has emerged of any hostile or murderous plans against the Holy Father" and Uzun , who "appears to be involved in criminal networks not related to terrorism of any kind".
