After two years and ten months of hearings , the most important trial against the 'ndrangheta ever held in Calabria has concluded.

This is the "Scott Rebirth" maxi-proceeding, initiated by the Catanzaro DDA, following the vast operation by the Carabinieri which led to the arrest of 334 people on 19 December 2019.

To manage such an impressive trial , the largest bunker courtroom in Europe was created in Lamezia Terme, at the behest of the then Catanzaro prosecutor Nicola Gratteri , 103 meters long, 35 meters wide, capable of holding more than a thousand people.

An important trial both in terms of numbers ( 338 defendants in the ordinary case alone ) and in terms of disputed charges and defendants involved. In the first degree of judgment, the Court presided over by Brigida Cavasino with Claudia Caputo and Germana Radice on the side, after 36 days of deliberation, inflicted 207 sentences with sentences ranging from 30 years to 10 months of imprisonment, for a total of over 2120 years in prison.

Among the "excellent" sentences is the 11-year sentence issued to the Catanzaro lawyer Giancarlo Pittelli, a well-known criminal lawyer and former parliamentarian of Forza Italia .

He is contested for external competition in a mafia association for having facilitated, thanks to his network of acquaintances, the Mancuso gangs of Limbadi and Fiarè-Razionale-Gasparro of San Gregorio D'Ippona .

The judges condemned Pittelli for external competition and for two cases of disclosure of official secrets.

Pittelli's defenders, the lawyers S alvatore Staiano, Guido Contestabile and Giandomenico Caiazza, railed against this decision.

Absent from the reading of the device, they sent a note in which they underlined how «this conviction was at all costs indispensable to save the credibility of the entire Rinascita Scott investigative operation ».

Also convicted at first instance were the former Dia financier Michele Marinaro, accused of external complicity and revelation of official secrets (10 years and 6 months) and the lieutenant colonel of the Carabinieri Giorgio Naselli (2 years and 6 months) accused of revelation of official secrets.
