Ukraine, Pope Francis: "War is madness, we need dialogue"
The pontiff in general audience: "We beg God to keep the peace"
Pope Francis invites the parties involved to avert a conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
At the end of the general audience, the pontiff thanked those who responded to his appeal and dedicated January 26 to prayers for peace in Ukraine.
His words are eloquent: "We continue to plead with the God of peace so that tensions and threats of war are overcome through serious dialogue and so that the talks in the Normandy Format can contribute to this purpose. And let's not forget: war is madness" .
The tension between Kiev and Moscow continues to remain high.
Moscow has been amassing troops on the Ukrainian border for months and NATO countries have strengthened their military presence in Poland and other Eastern European states.
According to Western intelligence, the Kremlin could launch an attack in mid-February.
In these hours, French President Emmanuel Macron flew to Vladimir Putin to seek mediation . Both Macron and Putin have confirmed their willingness to stop the escalation. But the situation still hangs by a thread.
