The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheik Hasina, resigned at the height of street protests which have seen a series of violence since July, with a death toll of over 300. Having escaped from the presidential palace in Dacca, which was under attack, she flew to India to the north-eastern city of Agartala. According to intelligence sources, India is willing to offer the former prime minister "safe passage".

Meanwhile, the head of the Bangladesh army, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced, in a speech to the nation broadcast by state TV, that he will form an interim government following the resignation of the prime minister.

The general said he would discuss it with President Mohammad Shahabuddin and that he had already been in contact with the main opposition parties and members of civil society, but not with the prime minister's Awami League.

«The country has suffered a lot, the economy has been hit, many people have been killed – he said -. It's time to end the violence." “Now the students' job is to stay calm and help us,” urged Waker-Uz-Zaman.
