G7 leaders and Evian , France, the day after the announcement of the agreement between the US and Iran , which ended a conflict that inflamed the Middle East and kept the world in suspense for 106 days.

The Iran dossier is naturally one of the issues on the summit table, in particular the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, scheduled – said US President Donald Trump – for Friday.

"There's no need for much help" from other countries, Trump said upon arrival in Evian, but French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed Paris's plan with Great Britain, Italy, and the Netherlands for a European naval mission to clear mines in the Strait and for other security purposes.

"We will do our part, subject to authorization from Parliament ," said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni . The dispatch of minesweepers and support vessels is being considered: Navy units ready to be deployed in the area along with logistics and security units, with the involvement of at least 500 military personnel .

The opening day in Evian also provided an opportunity for a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Macron , after the skirmishes of recent weeks. A meeting marked by a desire for relaxation .

But during the summit – which concludes on Wednesday – artificial intelligence and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine will also be discussed: London, Paris and Berlin are pushing for the opening of peace negotiations on a very different basis than a year ago, after the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska: Starmer, Macron and Merz are asking in particular that Russia accept an immediate truce as a "starting point for negotiations" and provide solid security guarantees to Kiev, with the deployment of a multinational force.
