One of the three Italian women who were missing last night following the train accident in Spain has been located and has notified the Italian Consulate in Madrid that she is safe.
The Farnesina reported this in a statement, emphasizing that the compatriot was traveling on the Renfe train. The number of missing persons has therefore dropped to two, and Italian diplomatic authorities are currently verifying their whereabouts with the Spanish police and health services.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that two women with Italian citizenship are still missing following the serious train accident that occurred yesterday morning in the Toledo area of Spain.
"Our consul is on site, we are trying to assist the families, the others are safe, one remains hospitalized," he added on the sidelines of an event in Rome . What happened in Spain is "an immense tragedy," Tajani added. "We stand with the Spanish people, their king, their government. The Spanish people are experiencing a tragic moment. It is a country very close to Italy, and the Italians stand very close to the Spanish people in this moment of profound grief," he added.
Meanwhile, the toll from the disaster is worsening: the number of reports of missing persons has risen to 64. The number of victims has risen to at least 68. Twenty-four hours after the train disaster, according to the authorities of Castile-La Mancha, 24 of the victims were traveling on the Renfe AVE train, which carried a total of 378 people, while another 44 victims were on the Iryo train, which carried a total of 147 people, including a newborn. A total of 183 people were injured, 107 of whom are hospitalized in Castile-La Mancha and 76 in Madrid. Four of the injured remain in intensive care, while a dozen are in critical condition. Of the missing persons reports filed by relatives of passengers on both trains, 38 were filed in Toledo, one in Logroño, six in Seville, and 19 in Madrid, according to the Guardia Civil.
Sources emphasize that the number of missing people will need to be cross-referenced and verified with the injured currently hospitalized. Over 200 Civil Guard officers are currently working at the scene of the accident, and approximately 500 have been deployed since the disaster occurred.
Officers are working with canine units in the area of the accident to search for any survivors or human remains. Around a hundred soldiers from the UME Army Emergency Unit and over 110 Civil Protection personnel are also involved in the search.
